Another year, another redesign

Woo-hoo! We're live for 2011! Just completed the redesign today, on Labor Day, and are getting ready for the 2011 NawFuL season that begins Thursday. Thursday! Can you believe that in this lockout-threatened year, when at times it appeared there might not even be a season, we are on the cusp of the traditionally scheduled opening day? It's going to be a great year, and we're all looking forward to it. Hope you like the new "platinum ribbon" design that honors our annual qust for the Surfy Trophy. BTW... that's Glenn's hand clenched around the coveted statuette. He's won it the past two seasons, but rest assured that Sean will be on his game as he tries to win the prize back. And don't forget about Ben, who proved last year that he can pick'em with the best of us, winning the overall title of best prognosticator.

Come check out the website, and we'll see you with picks on Thursday.

Woo-hoo! We're live for 2010

The best way to get anything done is to wait until the last minute. That is juat aout what it took to complete this year's redesign, but we hope you'll like it. Not a lot of major tweaking, but we do have new mug shots of each of the Gehlke Bros. team as well as a spiffy new banner. This year's banner is a take on the Works Progress Administration posters of yore that encouraged American citizens to do their civic duty during the war and Great Depression years. And what could be more American in these economically unsettled times than to engage in that great American pastime, professional football. We hope to see some out of the NawFuL this season.

Senior Bro Glenn prepares to defend his first Gehlke Bros. season championship in five years, while Junior Bro Sean looks to reclaim the Surfy trophy that he has won eight of the past 11 years. Ben, aka the Chaos Kid, will be looking to return to his more successful prognosticating ways in 2010; he stumbled a bit last year. For sure, we are all eager to engage in another fun-filled, action packed football season.

Get ready for Thursday's kickoff, and my the best Bro win!

Season standings updated... finally

We haven't been able to bring you updated standings since Week 8 because of "technical problems" at Gehlke Bros. Football HQ. That is, we lost our Week 9 picks. Literally. Glenn was in the hospital, and Ben and Sean didn't hang on to whatever papers they had recorded that week's picks on. We put our best forensic technicians on the case and came up with a solution we hope works.

That is, we recreated the picks from memory.

You'll find our best guess as to what happened if you check out the season updates at the Gehlke Bros. Football site. Meanwhile, we have been able to determine that Glenn has an 8-game lead on Sean and a 9-game lead on Ben heading into Week 14. That's the Senior Bro's biggest lead this late in the season since 1998, as he tries to win his first Surfy since 2004. Is this the year?

Welcome back, football fans

It's been nearly eight months since the debacle that was my 2008 season, but in just three and a half weeks I'll get my annual chance at redemption. I've finished updating the Gehlke Bros. Football website, which is probably the earliest I've accomplished that in a few years. Does that mean I'm ready for the start of the season? Heck no.

If you haven't already discovered us on Twitter, be sure to visit. You can follow us at NawFuL. It's sort of experimental and we're not sure how it will all work out, but if we can get a follower or two by season's end then we'll call it a success. (And no, Ben, Sean and I don't count toward the total!)

Anyhow, kickoff is Sept. 10. We'll have more updates between now and then. Hope you'll join us.

Junior Bro's Victory

I thought this would be Ben's year. In the end, it took a 14-2 week for me to pull out the win. Ironically, Week 17 is the only week that I was ahead of Ben and Senior Bro in the standings this year. I have never had a more exciting week for watching football (at least when my team isn't fighting for a playoff spot).

Congratulations to Ben for making a huge improvement in the standings and giving me a run for my money. Perhaps the Detroit Lions can learn something from his performance.

As for the Senior Bro, I won't make any comparisons to the New York Jets or the Dallas Cowboys. I will say that it was a close race and the difference was a handful of games that could have gone either way down the stretch. Sometimes it's better for me to be lucky than good.

See you in 2009!

The final act?

Well, we've reached the end of the 2008 regular season, and I find myself in the unenviable position of being a game behind Sean and three games behind Ben with 16 games on Sunday to decide it all... or not. If we have a tie then we have to pick the playoffs and the Super Bowl, which we haven't had to do in years. Frankly, I'm disappointed to be here at all right now. I had a four-game lead on Sean five weeks ago, and every week since then he's managed to eat into my lead a game at a time. And I haven't made up any serious ground on Ben. Once again I think I may have to say it's just not my year.

But that doesn't mean I'm giving up. The final week of the season often brings many surprises. But there are still some motivated playoff contenders, so the chance for big upsets may be limited. I'm searching hard to find them now. Better go make my picks and see how tomorrow shapes up.

Rolling the dice

There comes a point in every football game where you have to decide whether to punt the ball or go for some trick play on fourth down. We've reached that point in the Gehlke Bros. Football season. Sean and I come into Week 16 four games behind Ben. The only way we'll catch him is to think outside the box and pick some teams (with winning potential) that he hasn't. I thought we'd get more splits this week, but he and I mustered just three. I also have three with Sean, while Ben and Sean have four. Theoretically, Sean could tie Ben this week; I could be a game back going into Week 17. Do I think this will happen? Heck no. My luck hasn't been that good lately. In fact, my season has been fizzling the past four weekends. I was four up on Sean, now we're tied. I lost a couple games on Ben after pulling to within two. Seems the same old story with me every year, but I haven't given up yet. Not until the end of Dec. 28...
