25 days... Could it really be August already? All around us the signs are pointing to the fact that another football season is about to get underway. Maybe it's the fact that all eyes were recently on Canton as Steve Young was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Or maybe it was the horror of seeing the Chargers and Packers going at it in prime time last Thursday. Or maybe it's talk of how long it will be until the ailing Niners ditch their top draft pick in favor of Tim Rattay at quarterback.
Then there are other little coincidences. For instance, I was at a barbecue this evening when I discovered that I was seated just a few feet away from Bubba Paris, who played for the Niners when they could do stuff like block and score points and win, oh, say Stupor Bores every couple of seasons. Watching Bubba shooting the breeze with his fans made me realize that only retired NawFuL superstars are allowed to rest on their laurels after winning a title. Not so for the Gehlke Bros. Every season is a rebuilding year for us, as we try to ascertain the degree of NawFuLness our teams have achieved in the off season. It is the only way to make accurate prognostications and improve our chances of winning the coveted Surfy trophy.
It's time to stop talking auto racing and worrying about baseball penant drives and focus on those ol' pigskin toters we love to hate -- or at least bash with reckless abandon.
Time to revamp the Web site in time for the Sept. 8 kickoff. The Bros. be ready.
