Junior Bro's Victory
I thought this would be Ben's year. In the end, it took a 14-2 week for me to pull out the win. Ironically, Week 17 is the only week that I was ahead of Ben and Senior Bro in the standings this year. I have never had a more exciting week for watching football (at least when my team isn't fighting for a playoff spot).
Congratulations to Ben for making a huge improvement in the standings and giving me a run for my money. Perhaps the Detroit Lions can learn something from his performance.
As for the Senior Bro, I won't make any comparisons to the New York Jets or the Dallas Cowboys. I will say that it was a close race and the difference was a handful of games that could have gone either way down the stretch. Sometimes it's better for me to be lucky than good.
See you in 2009!Labels: Junor Bro's Victory

The final act? Well, we've reached the end of the 2008 regular season, and I find myself in the unenviable position of being a game behind Sean and three games behind Ben with 16 games on Sunday to decide it all... or not. If we have a tie then we have to pick the playoffs and the Super Bowl, which we haven't had to do in years. Frankly, I'm disappointed to be here at all right now. I had a four-game lead on Sean five weeks ago, and every week since then he's managed to eat into my lead a game at a time. And I haven't made up any serious ground on Ben. Once again I think I may have to say it's just not my year.
But that doesn't mean I'm giving up. The final week of the season often brings many surprises. But there are still some motivated playoff contenders, so the chance for big upsets may be limited. I'm searching hard to find them now. Better go make my picks and see how tomorrow shapes up.

Rolling the dice There comes a point in every football game where you have to decide whether to punt the ball or go for some trick play on fourth down. We've reached that point in the Gehlke Bros. Football season. Sean and I come into Week 16 four games behind Ben. The only way we'll catch him is to think outside the box and pick some teams (with winning potential) that he hasn't. I thought we'd get more splits this week, but he and I mustered just three. I also have three with Sean, while Ben and Sean have four. Theoretically, Sean could tie Ben this week; I could be a game back going into Week 17. Do I think this will happen? Heck no. My luck hasn't been that good lately. In fact, my season has been fizzling the past four weekends. I was four up on Sean, now we're tied. I lost a couple games on Ben after pulling to within two. Seems the same old story with me every year, but I haven't given up yet. Not until the end of Dec. 28...

Running out of time Ben seems to have our number this year. I had him down to two games after the Thanksgiving Day games, but since then he's built himself back to a 5-game lead. Last Monday's loss was a killer for me. With three weeks left and trailing by that much, catching him is going to be tough. There is a chance today, however, to gain ground. Ben and I have three splits. I would have to win all of them. I have a feeling there will be some upsets, but not feeling confident in picking any of them, I didn't. Unless you can call taking St. Louis at home over struggling Seattle an upset. That's my lone split with Sean. I have to win that game and either Tampa Bay-Atlanta or Pittsburgh-Baltimore to have a successful week.

Days of infamy This being the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks reminds me that there can be historic moments in the football season as well. Will this week be the one when the home teams finally regain some of their home field advantage? The magic hasn't been there the past two weekends. I'm banking on it returning, because I've got the homeboys picked in 12 of this week's 16 contests. As Han Solo said famously in "Star Wars," I've got a bad feeling about this...
