The Draft
It's been a long time since my last post, but I wanted to comment on last month's NFL draft.
The 49ers appeared to have a strong draft on paper, filling just about every position of need, including wide receiver. However, I don't expect this year's draft to make up for the absolute gutting of the team during the offseason. The Niners won't be able to compete until they are willing or able to spend the big bucks.
The recent injury to Tim Rattay doesn't help either. The 49ers have no other quarterbacks who have thrown an NFL pass.
The Raiders choice of a bruising offensive tackle in the first round seems a good fit. However, they still haven't addressed their aging at the skill positions of wide receiver and quarterback. If anything, the Raiders continue to get older by signing more and more over-the-hill free agents.
Don't expect much from either Bay Area team this coming season.
