I HAVE RETURNED
Junior Bro returns at last from a long absence from NawFul Notes. Time and illness have not alloted me much time to post lately, but I have a few brief thoughts:
1) Prior to this weekend, Eric Johnson was leading the NFL in receptions. Who is Eric Johnson you ask? He's the starting tight end for the 49ers, Bill Walsh's final pick as a GM, from Yale University. He had more catches than Issac Bruce, Randy Moss, or Terrell Owens. Eric Johnson has proven himself to be a solid tight end, but it also goes to show the woeful state of the 49ers receiving corps.
2) The 49ers appear to only be capable of playing one half of offense per game. Most games, the offense takes the first half off, comes roaring back in the second half, only to fall short, usually by an untimely turnover. Against the Jets, the 49ers scored 14 points in the first half and were shutout for the rest of the game.
3) With a combined three victories, the 49ers and Raiders are prime contenders for the Blooper Bowl this year.
4) The Raiders have a great deal of competition for that dubious distiction however, as the Dolphins and the "back to reality" Bengals are in a battle for the AFC worst.
5) Jerry Rice can still play somewhere, although he passed his prime long ago. My question is, if the Raiders weren't intending to use him this season, why did they resign him? The Raiders let Tim Brown go, after all. The Raiders need to dump a lot of aging dead weight from their roster, including some of the free agents they picked up in the offseason.
6) Notice how all the 49er castoffs seem to be doing well? Terrell Owens, Jeff Garcia, and Steve Marriucci. Whatever happend to Garrison Hearst though?
7) You have to believe that charma is going to come back to bite Terrell Owens at some point, but it may not happen until the playoffs the way the Eagles are playing.
8) The Detroit Lions are by far the biggest surprise in the NFL this season. It's also surprising how bad the Kansas City Chiefs started the year, before turning it on in the last couple of weeks.
9) How about this for a Super Bowl matchup: Minnesota vs. New England, will see if I'm close on this one.
10) The 49ers didn't lose last weekend. I had to say it now, because I'm not likely to be saying if very often this season (if ever).
