49ers First Month In Review

Week 1 - A New Hope:
The 49ers didn't look anything like last year's team. Offense, defense, special teams, trick plays, timely turnovers, and great coaching...wow! They ruined their perfect 0-16 season. I predicted a sub-500 finish for the 49ers this year, but they brought my hopes up.

There were signs of last year, though. The Rams came roaring back at the end of the game, and would have won, had it not been for a clutch interception at the end of the game. The Rams ran 97 plays on offense!!!

Week 2 - T.O. IS Odor: Well, back to reality. The 49ers were royally thumped by Philadelphia. The defense looked terrible and the offense looked worse. If there were any believers in Rattay being a long-term starter, this game made them lose their faith.

Terrell Owens may be the most talented receiver in the league, but he can certainly cause more than his share of trouble for his own team, as well as the opposition. The Right Guard add where he represents odor is very appropriate.

Week 3 - How About Them Cowboys?: These are the 49ers of last year. What happend to the energy? What happend to the trick plays? Once again, a lead is blown. Once again, Rattay turns the ball over at will in the fourth quarter. The running game was a bit better than the first couple of weeks, but overall, still pathetic. This was a truly awful team losing to a below average team.

Week 4 - Montezuma's Revenge: The 49ers can't even beat the only team they defeated last year. The final score of 31-14 does not illustrate that this was a winable game until the middle of the fourth quarter. Rattay was finally benched, although he didn't have much time to throw, anyway. I lost count of how many times Rattay was hit from the blind side.

Injuries, injuries, injuries! The offensive line is the shambles, the defensive backfield is the same. Smith is going to start next week, but I'd just as soon see Ken Dorsey, because Smith is going to be killed by the pass rush.

Kevan Barlow should join Rattay on the bench. The main reason for the 49ers low time of possesion statistics the last four games is due to a lack of a running game. Put in Gore for a few more plays (except passing downs, because he seems to have trouble with blitz pickups). Whatever happend to Maurice Hicks. He ran well out of the backfield last year.

The defense was on the field way too long in that altitude. They provided a 14 point lead, but faded down the stretch as the 49ers offense was shutout and on the bench most of the time.

What happend to the trick plays? Let's see a few more gimmicks to put some life into these sad sacks. Could we bring Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Randy Cross, Eric Wright, and...heck... even Bubba Paris out of retirement??? ONE AND FIFTEEN, HERE WE COME! HELP!!!
