On holiday The Senior Bro is starting a two-week vacation, but that doesn't mean I'm relaxing when it comes to football picks. Week 4 will see just 13 games, which means my record of posting double-digit correct guesses in each of the first three weeks is definitely on the line. I screwed up last week changing my pick at the last minute to Green Bay over Dallas, and although I still went 11-5 I was disgusted with myself. Should have followed my intuition. That's what I'll be doing this Sunday, and it looks like one of those weeks where there won't be a lot of disagreement, which means that if my intuition is wrong then it might be the only split I get with Junior Bro. Ben, meanwhile, doesn't agree with all my choices. We'll have four splits between us, which means he could wind up ahead or tied with me if he has a great week.

Too simple? I am always wary of weeks like Week 3, where you run down the list of games and all the choices look so clear-cut. Could we be in for some big upsets this Sunday? I've been a 10-game winner two weeks straight, but I'm nervous that could come to an end this time, and I'll probably be regretting lost opportunities in Monday's final analysis. Stay tuned...

Now that feels better Didn't get to chime in here the other day when Sean and I logged another seven splits between us, and I must say that I was pretty nervous about my prospects of having a good week. In fact, I didn't watch the outcomes of the early games because I headed out to the Oakley Almond Festival with my wife and son. At that point, around noon, I was leading in two and trailing in another two. I was surprised to come home and discover I'd won three of them. I was also surprised to see that the one I'd lost -- Colts-Vikings -- I'd been leading comfortably. Just goes to show that a lot of this sport (from the perspective of a couch potato prognosticator) is luck. Also lucky was getting that Cowboys win Monday evening. I would have put money on the Eagles taking the ball on last possession and getting another TD. Am I disappointed about the outcome of the San Diego-Denver game. You betcha. I'm very glad I wasn't watching it live! But I won't complain about the week's success. When was the last time I had a three-game lead over Junior Bro? Been a very long time. Now I've got to figure out how to keep the momentum going, which is about as tough to do as getting the Raiders back-to-back victories.

Haven't done the final tally yet, but Senior and Junior Bro remain tied. Ben may have lost a little ground. The recap's coming tonight.

Disheartening It really stinks to have a great weekend of predictions undone by a lousy Monday night -- and two lousy Monday night games at that. I guess the Raiders forgot that preseason is over. Ouch. The game's still going on as I write this, but the outcome is pretty clear. Lane Kiffin must really want to get fired.
The Vikings had a closer finish against the Packers, but they looked mediocre much of the evening. If I have one goal this season, it's to find a way to shrug off the Monday (Sunday, Thursday, your day of the week here) Night Curse.

Perfect! Well, one game into the season and we're all undefeated. This will probably be the last time I get to say that, so I have to relish the thrill while I can.
I'll be brutally honest here: I know next to nothing about the caliber of the NawFuL teams heading into Week 1. I can make some educated guesses, which is what all good prognosticators do. But I have no idea how accurate those guesses will be. The league tossed us some tough games in opening week: Jags and Titans... Bucs and Saints... and of course the two Monday nighters, Vikings and Packers, and Broncos and Raiders.
If I'm gonna reclaim the Surfy trophy this year I'm gonna have to find a way through the next 255 games. Hope the football gods are with me.Labels: football, NFL, predictions
